Dragon Claw is a robust, summer-picked oolong tea that is best described using the Nepalese tribal expression, “Mio Kulang,” which means dragon or eagle claws. It is highly oxidized, which gives it a deep brown liquor with notes of candied hazelnuts, nutmeg, and apricot jam. As the tea is steeped and enjoyed, notes of brown sugar and toasted walnut develop.

Cultivated during the summer flush, the tea is plucked at the beginning of the harvest when the leaves are dark green. Processing begins with mechanical rolling and shaping, which gently bruises the leaves and darkens the color, and indicates that its oxidation (60%) is complete. Its deep color reveals a surprisingly golden cup, with a rich-tasting amber cup.

The very first harvest is set aside for the production of our Emerald Green tea. Only the first bud and a leaf or the first two leaves and a bud of the spring season are selected to make this tea. The reason for this selection is to harness all the natural freshness of spring tea that comes out only at the beginning of the season. The hand-plucked leaves are immediately taken to the factory and undergo a process of conditioning. The leaves are then jet-steamed on a perforated tray and immediately cooled by blowing cold air. The cooled leaves are rolled and then oven-dried. This tea has a distinct spring briskness and a flowery aroma with a flavor that leaves you with a lingering sweet aftertaste.

Tea Can Transform Nepal | Improving Lives in Nepal

At Nepali Tea Traders, our mission is to bring Nepal’s remarkable teas to the growing Western markets (North America and Europe)  in order to help the tea farmers and workers improve their lives. We purchase tea from a farmer co-op in Ilam, paying fair prices that help to build a sustainable tea economy. More income means families can afford to send children to school, and communities can provide better education and healthcare, helping break a cycle of poverty.

Every purchase of tea will also support the Nepal Youth Foundation. The organization was founded by Olga Murray when she traveled to Nepal in 1984 and observed the many serious needs in a country that is among the world’s poorest. Today, NYF’s initiatives include health, shelter, and education, with a focus on a special focus on educating girls. Historically, many girls have had to drop out of school at an early age to work and help at home. The Nepal Youth Foundation is working to change this dynamic, with schools, scholarships, and support. Click here to see more

As many of our customers and supporters have done in the past, you may also choose to increase your support to Nepal by adding a direct donation to the Nepal Youth Foundation with your tea purchase or to accompany a gift of tea.  Please note that you can use the drop-down menu below to select the contribution level of your choice.
